What We are Planning
What to do: POTLUCK – Please bring a
side dish or dessert to share. Also meat to
grill if you wish. You may wish to bring
lawn chairs. There will be a $2.00 per
person admission fee.
The Assembly will provide: Grill Briquettes,
hot dogs, hamburgers, condiments, bread
and sodas/bottled water.
Please let our Faithful Captain, John Landicho, or his wife
Lady Cora, know that you are coming and what
type of food item you will bringing. This way they
can try to see that we will have enough of everything.
Don’t get a sitter if you have children; bring them
along; after all, we are a family organization.
You will be able to sign-up at the September

Master's Log For August
With Assembly and Council Training behind us, the Officers are off and running, and we are now in the swing of things. Hopefully most of the planning is done, Installation of Officers is underway, and Programs are being initiated. August is a very busy month with Installations and Vacations, but be ready to hit September full speed. The great ideas you had in June and July must be fleshed out and planned early. Before you know it, time will be slipping by.
There are no National Holidays in August, but there is one very special Feast Day - the Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven. Our District is blessed with the presence of Mary's House also known as The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This National Shrine is located in the Nation's Capital, and we are the home team. When events are televised on EWTN, we truly represent ALL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. We take special pride in this honor and privilege. I would like to see this reflected in fundraising activities by all of the Assemblies to offset the cost of the Knights of Columbus Incarnation Dome.
Prior to the start of the school year, contact your local Scouting Troops and consider sponsoring an Eagle Scout Project. When you consider a special scouting program do not forget the Girl Scouts. They have a Gold Medal Program that is just as demanding as the Eagle Scout Program. In addition to boy scouts and girl scouts, also contact schools and parish youth groups. Some of our youth today do not have a good knowledge of our Flag or Patriotism. Consider a talk or demonstration on Flag History, Flag Etiquette, Flag Folding, or Flag Retiring Ceremonies.
It is not too early to begin recruiting new members for our Councils and Assemblies. The use of the Color Corps of your Assembly can be a valuable tool for recruitment - it gets the Knights of Columbus noticed. Work on recruiting First Degree members and act as mentors taking them through the higher degrees of the Order. Navigators and Commanders are encouraged to visit their affiliated Councils for more then just recruitment. As part of a Lecturer's Program, ask the Grand Knight if you can give a talk on the Flag, Patriotism, Color Corps, or the role of the Fourth Degree.
Remember our service men and women, especially those in harm's way. May God Bless them and send St Michael the Archangel to protect and guide them.
Finally, Brenda and I recently returned from Sydney Australia. The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, was also there. According to the Washington Post, the purpose of his visit was to apologize to victims of abuse. The Catholic Standard gives a different view. Hundreds of thousands of young people from all parts of the globe traveled to Sydney for World Youth Day 2008. They gathered with the bishops of the Church to learn about the Holy Spirit and the gifts that allow them and enable them to be apostles and missionaries for Jesus Christ. Over 400,000 were present for the closing Mass. Bishop Holley and four seminarians joined the youth of our Archdiocese and ate, prayed, and walked with them each day. Cardinal McCarrick was also there and he met with us on Saturday after a special Mass for Pilgrims from the States. The Catholic Church is alive and well with our youth. WYD 2011 will be in Madrid Spain.

Lord God, bless our Holy Father who comes as a messenger of peace and charity to all people of faith and goodwill. May his presence in the United States serve to build up the bonds that unite us who are each made in your image and likeness, and may his teaching and witness strengthen the faith of the People of God. Master's Log for June
As we near the end of the Columbian Year, let's take some time to reflect. We began with the Installation of State, Council, and Assembly Officers and ended with the Pope at the White House and National's Stadium. In between, we had Mass with the Cardinal from the Philippines and the Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. On the local level, there were many successful programs and ceremonies. It was an outstanding and busy year!
What lessons have you learned that you wish to pass on to the newly elected officers of your council or assembly? To what lessons from your predecessor do you wish you paid more attention? Life is like that. You often don't know what input is important or worthwhile until it's too late, and you wish others would take the time to listen to your words of wisdom.
One lesson most CEO's learn is that they can not be a dictator and go it alone. In addition to being the Manager, you must also be the Leader. As manager, you set the policy and control the finances and resources. As leader you establish trust, enable others, and inspire all to do their best. It is the combination of management and leadership skills that brings success. Take time to listen and allow others to share thoughts and opinions. Then you make the decisions justly and fairly.
I thank all of the Faithful Navigators and Assembly Officers for making the Archdiocese of Washington District among the best Districts in the best Province. I thank the Marshals and Commanders for making AWD and Calvert Province the example to follow. I thank the District Choir and Degree Team for another OUTSTANDING year. I thank the District Staff for their support and teamwork that made the Master's role so much easier. I thank all of our Chaplains and Faithful Friars for their guidance and time. Above all, I thank all the Ladies who allow us the time and give us the encouragement to do what we do.
Before we pin on our newly earned miniature jewels, we need to complete some paperwork and reports. Please see to it that all is done on time. Remember that earlier is much better than on-time, while late is unacceptable.
God bless you and your families and God Bless America - One Nation Under God, Born and the Unborn.

This month we start a new Columbian Year. The new officers have received their training, and high expectations have been set. Each Assembly is asked to not only continue the work and traditions of the past, but also to grow and develop new programs and traditions.
I wish to thank all the Faithful Navigators, Commanders, and Comptrollers for their time and support during the previous year. Because of you and the other Assembly Officers, the District was very successful. I sincerely thank each and every one of you. With their Leadership, our District was the first to reach 100% submission of the both the Form 186 Report and the Civic Report.
Take advantage of the expertise of your PFN's and former officers, and ask for their help when issues or problems come up. You are also supported by the Sir Knights of the District Staff.
I look forward to working with the new officers who will be installed in the coming months.
The Birth of our Nation is celebrated on July 4th. This Birth came at great personal cost to those Patriots who signed the Declaration of Independence. Throughout our history many patriotic men and women stepped forth to guard, protect, and insure those hard fought freedoms. Again, at great personal cost. Think for a moment about how Francis Scott Key felt. How awesome! Real bombs and real bullets flying throughout the night - BUT the Flag was still there! How could it be? Against the greatest navy in the world.
Think about and pray for the Patriotic men and women who today go in harm's way. Then tell your children what all the fancy fireworks are really about.
God Bless America! There would be no America without God and without the men and women willing to pledge everything they have to protect our Great Land.
